Founder's Welcome
Greetings. It is a pleasure to welcome you to our Black History Month Celebration. I want to take a moment to highlight a few historical aspects and the true importance this month brings us.
Black History Month began back in 1926 through Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson believed February would be an appropriate month because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln; two key figures in the fight for African American’s freedom. Although Black history has been reserved for a month, Black history is more than a month; it is a soul that has a past, a present and a future. Today, we are witnessing the success of Black leaders that fifty years ago we could only dream of. For example, the 44th President of the United States was a Black man and the 49th Vice President of the United States is a Black woman.
As a culture we are grateful for the progress that we have seen however we still feel disparity. The purpose of this month is to commemorate the brave souls who have paved the way for the rest of us. I use the challenges we face to drive my passion for diversity and inclusion. My goal is for the National Diversity Council to reflect the value I place on this subject. I am grateful you have joined us on this quest for equality.
To get the most out of this experience take full advantage of the engagement opportunities during our Black History Month Celebration. This month will consist of different workshops and panel discussions. For a full schedule of events please visit the link. I hope to see you there!
